Kayak Trips on Eastern Maine's Bold Coast
As sea kayaking on the Maine coast has continued to grow in popularity, so has the reputation surrounding Maine's easternmost kayaking destination, the Bold Coast of Washington county. Among the unique coastal highlights found here are the Great Wass Island nature preserve in the Jonesport archipelago and the native american petroglyphs found on the islands of Machias Bay.

Still, much of eastern Maine's kayaking reputation stems from coastal Washington county's dynamic paddling conditions. Powerful currents associated with Maine's largest tides and abundant fog generated by the cold waters of the Labrador current combined with the fact that the Bold Coast lies beyond Maine's mainstream travel destinations give these waters an intriguing yet intimidating feel even to experienced kayakers.

Reputation aside, coastal Washington county has a lot to offer the adventurous spirit. A knowledgeably led group can find plenty of opportunities for beginning and experienced paddlers alike to thoroughly enjoy this area while retaining the option of seeking out challenging conditions.

For over ten years Sunrise Canoe and Kayak has been Maine's only outfitter to lead a range of trips throughout the season on the Washington county coast.

Washington county's Bold Coast will stand alone in your memory as a kayaking experience. Locally knowledgable professional guides will offer instruction on many kayaking topics including kayak technique, coastal navigation, route planning, and low-impact use.

Trip Options:

petroglyph trips Bold Coast Highlights is a 4-day program designed to explore the best of what the eastern Maine coast has to offer. Each day we will paddle a new destination on the Bold Coast and return to the mainland in the evening.

The benefits of this style program in this particular area are hard to beat:
  • we will be paddling empty kayaks which are more responsive and easier to paddle
  • we will paddle the best destinations on the coast without the added worry of having to make "distance" to our next destination
  • we can pick the best day to paddle certain destinations
  • you will return to a bed each night at the accommodation of your choice and eat a sit-down-meal at the venue of your choice (we will help you with these decisions should you need some ideas!).
Among other destinations, Bold Coast Highlights will explore the Jonesport archipelago including the Great Wass Island nature preserve and the Machias Bay petroglyphs.

The Bold Coast Trip is a 4-day self-contained trip which puts in near the Jonesport archipelago. The take-out could be at any number of points depending on how far we progress along our easternly route. Sea conditions may be a factor in where we take-out, more often it is the desire to explore the many islands and archipelagos which "limits" our easterly progression. Although there are plenty of islands open to day use along the Bold Coast, places open to overnight use are minimal and require the utmost responsibility from the users, wether publicly owned or solicited by Sunrise. For a number of reasons, at least some, maybe all, sleeping and cooking areas will be on rock surfaces and participants should be prepared for this aspect of the trip.
